Iraq is a country in Western Asia. The capital city, Baghdad is in the center-east of the country. The Iraq Outline Map shows the geographical location of this nation with respect to her neighboring countries: bordered by Jordan to the west, Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. It is worth noting that the 19 governorates including Halabja one, that Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) had been advocating for the status of Halabja to be raised due to its significance. However, the situation remains complex. While Halabja is recognized as a governorate within the Kurdistan Region, tensions between the Kurdish authorities and the central government in Baghdad, especially over issues like oil revenues and territorial disputes, sometimes complicate the relationship and the full integration of Halabja’s governance structure. The 18 Governorates are further divided into 101 Districts. The 101 Districts are classified into the 18 Governorates as follows: Al-Anbar (7), Al-Basrah (7), Al-Muthanna (4), Al-Najaf (3), Al-Qadissiya (4), Al-Sulaymaniyah (10), Babil (4), Baghdad (7), Diyala (6), Duhok (4), Erbil (6), Kerbala (3), Kirkuk (4), Maysan (6), Ninewa (9), Salah Al-Din (7), Thi Qar (5), and Wassit (5).  The 101 Districts are further divided into 294 Subdistricts, you can check our Iraq map with Districts and Subdistricts.

Each of Iraq’s 18 governorates is subdivided into districts (known as “qadha”), which are essentially administrative units designed to handle local affairs. These districts vary in size, population, and economic significance. For example, Baghdad, the capital, is divided into several districts, each with its own local government, while other governorates like Basra, Nineveh, and Diyala have large districts that play critical roles in the local economy and security.
